DING 2012: “ Born in Devonshire, he was educated at the University of London and at University College, Aberystwyth, and got his Ph. D. at Strasbourg with a thesis on “The interpretation of Nature in English Poetry from Beowulf to Shakespeare”. He became a lecturer at the Yorkshire College which was to become the University of Leeds in 1904. He was later appointed Professor of the English Language there.
