DING 2014: “Known as the Horncastle laureate. He was the son of the Workhouse master. He worked as a cabinet maker, house painter and glazier; as a cabin boy he sailed to Russia. He lived and worked in Lincoln between 1838 and 1848 when he returned to Horncastle where he was to remain until his death. He became the owner of The Globe Inn about 1860 and he held literary meetings with friends of similar inclinations.”
