In 1848 he created The Monthly Observer, a literary manuscript magazine. He helped writer George Meredith at the beginning of his career. He was a member of The Cannibal Club. He wrote several books on etymology, toponimics and patronymics as well as being the editor of a travel guide to Spain and Portugal.”.”
